Why Ninjutsu Works for Everyone—Not Just Athletes

When people think of Ninjutsu, the self-defense and personal development system of Japan's ancient Samurai & Ninja, they often picture the Hollywood version: wall-climbing, acrobatic mercenaries who can disappear into thin air. It’s an exciting image, but it’s far from the reality of what Ninjutsu truly is. The real Ninjutsu is an adaptable, practical system of self-defense that anyone can learn—regardless of age, physical condition, or athletic ability.
Real Training for Real People
Let me start by sharing a bit about myself. I’m almost 62 years old, and while I’m still very skilled and mobile, I’m not the picture of a movie ninja. Due to prior injuries and the effects of medications, I’m also overweight. In the world of sport martial arts, this might be seen as a disadvantage, but in the real world of self-defense, it’s actually a strength.
You see, most of my students aren’t athletes either. They’re people from all walks of life—men and women who have families to protect, jobs to do, and lives to live. They’re not training for a competition; they’re training to ensure they can handle whatever life throws at them. That’s why I focus on teaching techniques that work in the real world, for real people, in real situations.
The Adaptability of Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu is designed to be adaptable. It’s not about brute strength or athletic prowess—it’s about using your mind, your environment, and your understanding of human nature to your advantage. Whether you’re 25 or 65, in peak physical condition or managing chronic pain, Ninjutsu can be adapted to fit your needs.
In my years of training and teaching, I’ve learned that the real power of Ninjutsu lies in its ability to make you "invisible." Not in the literal sense, of course, but in the sense that you can move through life without attracting unnecessary attention. You learn how to avoid conflict, how to de-escalate situations, and when necessary, how to defend yourself in ways that are efficient, effective, and surprising to those who might underestimate you.
The Power of Being Underestimated
One of the most dangerous assumptions people make about self-defense is that it’s all about physical dominance. The truth is, being underestimated because of your age, size, or appearance can be one of your greatest strengths. In Ninjutsu, we use this to our advantage. The techniques I teach are designed to work in situations where you might not be the strongest or the fastest, but you are the smartest and most prepared.
For example, many of the techniques involve using leverage, pressure points, and timing to neutralize a threat. These aren’t moves that require you to be in peak physical condition—they’re moves that require you to think quickly, stay calm, and act decisively. This is why my students, many of whom are older, out of shape, or managing injuries, can defend themselves just as effectively as anyone else.
Why Ninjutsu Is Not What You See in the Movies
The Hollywood image of the ninja as an acrobatic, sword-wielding assassin is far from the truth. In reality, Ninjutsu is about survival, adaptability, and understanding how to use your environment and your opponent’s assumptions against them. It’s about mastering the art of being underestimated and turning that to your advantage.
When I teach Ninjutsu, I’m not training people to be athletes. I’m training them to be protectors—of themselves, their families, and their communities. The skills I teach are designed to be practical and applicable in everyday life. They’re about real-world effectiveness, not about looking good in a uniform or performing flashy moves.
