The Evolution of Martial Arts: Why Ninjutsu Has Always Been the Ultimate MMA — And Why It’s FAR More Than Just Fighting

by Dai-Shihan Jeffrey Miller SPS, DTI

Dai-Shihan Jeffrey Miller

In modern martial arts circles, MMA is often considered the pinnacle of practical fighting skill—a hybrid system that blends striking, grappling, and conditioning to create versatile fighters capable of handling a variety of situations. While this approach has proven effective in sport-based combat, there’s a critical flaw in thinking that MMA is the ultimate system for real-world survival.

The truth is, centuries before MMA became popularized as a combat sport, the ancient Ninja were already training in an adaptable, multi-dimensional system designed to prepare them for threats that had no rules, referees, or predictable outcomes - that could come from anywhere and without warning. This system—called Ninja no Hachimon ("The Eight Gates of Ninja Training")—was far more than just a collection of fighting techniques. It was a comprehensive framework for survival, rooted in strategy, adaptability, and mental mastery.

The Hidden Truth About Ninjutsu’s ‘Original MMA’ Approach

Where modern MMA fighters focus on defeating an opponent in a controlled environment, the Ninja’s training was built around surviving unpredictable encounters—where attackers weren’t just fighters, but potentially assassins, criminals, or other warriors intent on capturing, imprisoning, or ending their lives.

And, as a former federal police officer, undercover investigator, private detective, and bodyguard... this is what I, my peers, and my serious students were and are looking for - not belts, trophies, or bragging rights!

The Ninja’s survival strategy wasn’t just about ‘fighting better’—it was about mastering eight core disciplines that addressed every aspect of self-protection and mission success. Without these eight areas, a so-called “Ninjutsu” school in ancient Japan would have been seen as incomplete, unbalanced, and ill-prepared for the dangers of the time.

The 8 Gates of Authentic Ninjutsu Training (Ninja no Hachimon)

The Ninja no Hachimon outlines the MINIMUM eight core skills or training areas required for a Ninjutsu practitioner to master, and historically are supposed to be a part of every "Ninja" school claiming to be teaching real Ninjutsu training. These eight pillars ensured that the practitioner wasn’t just prepared to “fight” but could survive violence, environmental challenges, and high-stakes encounters where quick thinking, adaptability, and deception were just as important as physical skills.

These eight disciplines or minimum skill areas are:

Ninja no Hachimon

1️⃣ Ninja no Kiai (Warrior's Focused Energy & Vocal Power)

  • More than just shouting—a refined method of projecting intention, intimidating attackers, and even creating split-second openings in an opponent’s guard.

2️⃣ Ninja no Taijutsu (Unarmed Combat)

  • The foundation of Ninjutsu’s movement, evasion, striking, and grappling principles—designed to conserve energy and overwhelm opponents without relying on strength alone.

3️⃣ Ninja no Ken (Swordsmanship)

  • Mastery of battlefield-ready tactics for both offense and defense with the katana and other edged weapons, often blending deceptive tactics with powerful cuts and other specialized and secret methods to gain the advantage and win quickly.

4️⃣ Ninja no Shuriken (Throwing Weapons)

  • Precision-based skills using concealed throwing tools—whether traditional star-shaped projectiles or improvised objects—to strike key points or create diversions.

5️⃣ Ninja no Sojutsu (Spear Fighting)

  • Mastery of long weapons for both close-range dominance and distance control—critical in both battlefield tactics and self-protection.

6️⃣ Ninja no Kajutsu (Fire & Explosives)

  • The Ninja’s ability to manipulate fire—for distraction, communication, or sabotage.

7️⃣ Ninja no Ugei (Deception, Manipulation, & Disguise)

  • A robust system of mental trickery, psychological manipulation, and skills for blending into various social environments and group dynamics—allowing the Ninja to outthink and outmaneuver opponents.

8️⃣ Ninja no Kyomon (Knowledge, Philosophy & Spiritual Study)

  • The deeper study of the mind, heart, and universal truths as-well-as a wide range of subject areas like science, mathematics, politics, philosophy and others. This critical component provided the Ninja with clarity of purpose, emotional control, and insight to guide their actions in dangerous situations. It was also key to guarding themselves against others using deception and manipulation tactics on them as well!

Translating Ancient Strategy to Modern Survival-Based Self-Defense

While these eight areas formed the foundation of traditional Ninjutsu, the world we live in today is vastly different from that of feudal Japan. Technology, social environments, and even the legal system have changed the dynamics of violence and conflict. It would be very difficult in today's world to justify the carrying of a sword or spear in most public spaces, or the use or even possession of materials and means for building fires and other skills catgorized within the Ninja no Kajutsu realm.

That’s why I’ve developed the Ninja no Hachimon Cheat Sheet—a concise yet powerful guide that helps you update this ancient framework for modern survival without violating the core principles that made the original system so effective.

This cheat sheet outlines:
✅ The traditional Ninja no Hachimon framework and its purpose.
✅ The core principle behind each of the eight gates—and why it's on the list.
✅ Modern adaptations for each area—what that weapon, strategy, or skill would look like based on the technology and other factors existent in today's world.

It's designed to give you a clear starting point for understanding the complete framework of Ninjutsu and how these eight areas ensure you’re not just training techniques… you're not just making up something via guesswork or simply throwing things together... but mastering the full spectrum of skills needed for real-world survival As originally intended by our ancient, spiritual forefathers.

Why the Hachimon is Critical in a Modern Context

Unlike MMA’s primary focus on defeating an opponent through strength, speed, and conditioning, or about winning trophies or other symbols of competitive success, the Ninja no Hachimon was designed to prepare a warrior for encounters that could involve multiple attackers, weapons, ambushes, or unpredictable conditions. The goal wasn’t to “win” a fight—it was to survive and succeed in any situation so you could continue to protect your family, community, and the secrecy of the clan itself.

This distinction is what makes authentic Ninjutsu a true “survival system,” far more comprehensive than just a set of techniques for ‘fighting’-just another martial arts choice among martial arts choices. The Hachimon’s versatility ensures that a Ninjutsu practitioner learns to adapt to whatever threat they face—whether that means deception, strategy, psychological control, or direct confrontation.

The Ninja no Hachimon Cheat Sheet reveals how these ancient methods should look and be applied today—showing you the tactics, strategies, and mindset shifts required to handle unpredictable violence in today's often dangerous world.

The Hachimon’s Lesson for Modern Students

For those seeking practical self-protection, learning to punch, kick, or grapple is only part of the equation. Real-world survival demands skills that go far beyond technical ability or being the "toughest guy (or girl) on the block."

Ninjutsu’s Eight Gates are not just ancient relics either—they’re a proven framework for developing the adaptability, awareness, and skill needed to navigate conflict, danger, and everyday threats. Whether you’re a martial artist seeking a deeper understanding, someone looking to develop real-world self-protection skills, or the individual looking to make sure their studying and practicing the "right way," understanding the Ninja no Hachimon reveals the true path to mastery and should be the first place you start.
