The teacher/no teacher paradox and why you need a teacher to learn what you cannot yet see.
“When you get to my level, it’s hard to get down what you want to teach in books and videos. Those media can’t do it justice. We are dealing with the three-dimensional here. And from there, beyond.”— Masaaki Hatsumi, Head of Bujinkan International

Most students think they understand a technique because they know the name, the step-by-step form, or where a hand or foot goes – where a strike lands, or how to do it in the dojo with little to no pressure.
But there’s a difference between “knowing” a technique and understanding it – “why” it works, what it gives you, takes from him or when it’s appropriate in the context of a real attack situation.
During this week’s KUDEN! Radio episode, I explore why books, videos, and even years of training can only take you so far—and why a teacher is still necessary to help you see what you cannot yet see.
